About this story

God commands Jonah to travel to Nineveh and warn its people, but Jonah boards a ship heading in the opposite direction. When a violent storm threatens everyone aboard, Jonah admits that he is running away from God and is thrown into the sea. A great fish swallows him, and Jonah spends three days inside it before being returned to dry land. He finally travels to Nineveh, where his warning produces an unexpected response. Jonah and the Whale is a memorable Bible story about disobedience, repentance, mercy and the difficulty of accepting compassion for people we dislike.

Alors la parole de Yahvé est venue à Jonas, fils d’Amittaï : « Lève-toi, va à Ninive, la grande ville, et annonce-lui mon jugement, car sa méchanceté est montée jusqu’à moi. » Mais Jonas s’est levé pour fuir à Tarsis, loin de la présence de Yahvé. Il est descendu à Joppé, où il a trouvé un navire qui partait pour Tarsis. Il a payé son passage et est monté à bord pour partir avec eux vers Tarsis, loin de la présence de Yahvé.

Alors Yahvé parle à Jonas, fils d’Amittaï. Il dit : « Lève-toi. Va à Ninive, la grande ville. Parle contre cette ville, parce que sa méchanceté monte jusqu’à moi. » Mais Jonas se lève pour fuir à Tarsis, loin de Yahvé. Jonas descend à Joppé. Il trouve un bateau qui va à Tarsis. Jonas paie le voyage. Puis Jonas monte dans le bateau pour aller à Tarsis, loin de Yahvé.
