About this story

God commands Jonah to travel to Nineveh and warn its people, but Jonah boards a ship heading in the opposite direction. When a violent storm threatens everyone aboard, Jonah admits that he is running away from God and is thrown into the sea. A great fish swallows him, and Jonah spends three days inside it before being returned to dry land. He finally travels to Nineveh, where his warning produces an unexpected response. Jonah and the Whale is a memorable Bible story about disobedience, repentance, mercy and the difficulty of accepting compassion for people we dislike.

Cuvântul lui Yahweh a venit la Iona, fiul lui Amitai: „Ridică-te, du-te la Ninive, cetatea aceea mare, și vorbește împotriva ei, pentru că răutatea oamenilor de acolo a ajuns înaintea mea.” Dar Iona s-a ridicat ca să fugă la Tarșiș, departe de Yahweh. A coborât la Iope, a găsit o corabie care mergea la Tarșiș, a plătit călătoria și s-a urcat în ea ca să plece cu cei de acolo la Tarșiș, departe de Yahweh.

Yahweh îi vorbește lui Iona, fiul lui Amitai. El spune: „Scoală-te. Du-te la Ninive, cetatea aceea mare. Spune împotriva ei, pentru că răutatea lor este înaintea mea.” Dar Iona se scoală ca să fugă la Tarșiș, departe de Yahweh. Iona coboară la Iope. Găsește o corabie care merge la Tarșiș.
