About this story

The people of the world speak one language and decide to build a great city with a tower reaching toward heaven. They hope the project will make them famous and prevent them from being scattered across the earth. God sees what they are building and confuses their language, making it impossible for them to understand one another. The unfinished city becomes known as Babel, and its people are scattered throughout the world. The Tower of Babel is a short and influential Bible story about ambition, pride and division that offers a biblical explanation for the existence of different languages.

Toute la terre parlait une seule langue, et tout le monde s’exprimait de la même manière. Comme les hommes se déplaçaient vers l’est, ils ont trouvé une plaine dans le pays de Shinar et ils s’y sont installés. Alors ils se sont dit les uns aux autres : « Allons, faisons des briques et cuisons-les bien. » Ils ont utilisé des briques à la place des pierres, et du bitume comme mortier. Puis ils ont encore dit : « Allons, construisons une ville, avec une tour dont le sommet atteindra le ciel. Faisons-nous un nom, pour ne pas être dispersés sur toute la surface de la terre. »

Toute la terre a une seule langue. Tout le monde parle de la même manière. Les hommes vont vers l’est. Puis ils trouvent une plaine dans le pays de Shinar. Alors ils habitent là. Les hommes se disent : « Allons, faisons des briques et cuisons bien les briques. » Alors ils utilisent des briques et non des pierres. Ils utilisent aussi du bitume comme mortier. Puis ils disent : « Allons, construisons une ville. Construisons aussi une tour. Le haut de la tour va toucher le ciel. Et faisons-nous un nom. Alors nous n’allons pas être dispersés sur toute la terre. »
