About this story

The people of the world speak one language and decide to build a great city with a tower reaching toward heaven. They hope the project will make them famous and prevent them from being scattered across the earth. God sees what they are building and confuses their language, making it impossible for them to understand one another. The unfinished city becomes known as Babel, and its people are scattered throughout the world. The Tower of Babel is a short and influential Bible story about ambition, pride and division that offers a biblical explanation for the existence of different languages.

En ese tiempo, toda la gente de la tierra hablaba una sola lengua y se entendía de la misma manera. Mientras iban hacia el oriente, encontraron una llanura en la tierra de Sinar y se quedaron a vivir allí. Entonces se dijeron unos a otros: «Vamos, hagamos ladrillos y cocinémoslos bien». Así usaron ladrillos en vez de piedra y asfalto como mezcla. Después dijeron: «Vamos, construyamos una ciudad para nosotros y también una torre que llegue hasta el cielo. Así nos haremos un nombre y no seremos dispersados por toda la tierra».

Toda la tierra tiene una sola lengua. Todos hablan igual. La gente va hacia el oriente. Entonces encuentra una llanura en la tierra de Sinar. La gente vive allí. Después se dicen unos a otros: «Vamos a hacer ladrillos y vamos a cocinarlos bien». Usan ladrillos y no piedra. Usan asfalto para unirlos. Luego dicen: «Vamos a construir una ciudad para nosotros. También vamos a construir una torre. La parte de arriba va a llegar al cielo. Así vamos a tener un gran nombre. Entonces no vamos a ir por toda la tierra».
