About this story

The people of the world speak one language and decide to build a great city with a tower reaching toward heaven. They hope the project will make them famous and prevent them from being scattered across the earth. God sees what they are building and confuses their language, making it impossible for them to understand one another. The unfinished city becomes known as Babel, and its people are scattered throughout the world. The Tower of Babel is a short and influential Bible story about ambition, pride and division that offers a biblical explanation for the existence of different languages.

Pe atunci, toți oamenii de pe pământ vorbeau aceeași limbă și se înțelegeau la fel. În timp ce mergeau spre răsărit, au ajuns la o câmpie din țara Șinear și s-au așezat acolo. Apoi și-au spus unii altora: „Haideți să facem cărămizi și să le ardem bine.” În loc de piatră au folosit cărămidă, iar în loc de mortar au folosit smoală. După aceea au zis: „Haideți să ne construim o cetate și un turn al cărui vârf să ajungă până la cer. Așa ne vom face un nume și nu vom fi împrăștiați pe toată fața pământului.”

Toți oamenii au o singură limbă. Toți vorbesc la fel. Oamenii merg spre răsărit. Apoi găsesc o câmpie în țara Șinear. Oamenii stau acolo. Ei își spun unul altuia: „Haideți să facem cărămizi și să le ardem bine.” Ei folosesc cărămida în loc de piatră. Ei folosesc și smoala ca mortar. Apoi oamenii spun: „Haideți să facem o cetate și un turn. Vârful turnului ajunge până la cer. Așa ne facem un nume și nu mergem în toate părțile pământului.”
