About this story

Bassanio wants to travel to Belmont and seek the hand of the wealthy Portia, but he needs money. His friend Antonio therefore borrows from Shylock, a Jewish moneylender whom Antonio has repeatedly insulted. Shylock agrees to the loan without interest but demands a frightening guarantee: if Antonio cannot repay him, Shylock may take a pound of his flesh. While Bassanio attempts to win Portia by choosing correctly among three mysterious caskets, news arrives that Antonio’s ships have been lost. The bond must now be settled in court. Can Portia’s intelligence save Antonio and what will the trial reveal about justice, prejudice and mercy?
