About this story

After escaping slavery in Egypt, the Israelites find themselves trapped between the Red Sea and Pharaoh’s approaching army. The frightened people believe they are about to die, but Moses tells them to stand firm. At God’s command, he raises his staff and the sea divides, creating a path across dry ground. The Israelites cross safely while the Egyptian chariots pursue them into the passage. Moses and the Parting of the Red Sea is one of the Bible’s most dramatic stories of escape and deliverance, filled with danger, miraculous power and the destruction of the army sent to recapture the fleeing people.

Cuando el faraón dejó salir al pueblo, Dios no los llevó por el camino de la tierra de los filisteos, aunque era el más corto. Lo hizo así porque pensó: «Tal vez, cuando vean la guerra, cambien de idea y vuelvan a Egipto». Por eso hizo que el pueblo diera un rodeo por el desierto, hacia el mar Rojo. Los israelitas salieron armados de Egipto. Moisés también se llevó los huesos de José, porque José había hecho jurar a los hijos de Israel: «Dios sin duda vendrá a ayudarlos, y ustedes se llevarán de aquí mis huesos». Salieron de Sucot y acamparon en Etam, al borde del desierto. Yahweh iba delante de ellos: de día, en una columna de nube para guiarlos por el camino; y de noche, en una columna de fuego para alumbrarlos, de modo que pudieran caminar tanto de día como de noche. La columna de nube durante el día y la columna de fuego durante la noche nunca se apartaron de delante del pueblo.

El faraón deja salir al pueblo. Dios no los lleva por el camino corto, por la tierra de los filisteos. Dios piensa: «Tal vez el pueblo va a ver guerra y va a regresar a Egipto». Entonces Dios lleva al pueblo por otro camino, por el desierto, junto al mar Rojo. Los hijos de Israel salen de Egipto con armas. Moisés lleva los huesos de José. José dice antes: «Dios los va a ayudar. Entonces ustedes van a sacar de aquí mis huesos». El pueblo sale de Sucot y pone su campamento en Etam, en el borde del desierto. De día, Yahweh va delante de ellos en una columna de nube. Así los guía por el camino. De noche, Yahweh va en una columna de fuego. Así les da luz. Entonces ellos pueden caminar de día y de noche. La columna de nube de día y la columna de fuego de noche siempre están delante del pueblo.
